“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel
Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her...

Wherever I Go Is Where I’m From
One of the most personal things I’ve ever written, let alone performed in public. Proud of myself. Please do watch if you have a second, you’ll get to know a little more about me. ♥
Perhaps the most meaningful thing you will come across this day, so watch it.
I guess I feel dirty talking about money because I don’t think we all come by it...
– theyvegotfakelove in answer to my question as to why talking about money makes her feel dirty.
The best response I’ve ever gotten during the rare times I’ve asked a question. All I can say is: Brava and Amen.

From Beaches to Bunkers: A Palestinian's Response
letsbehonest:
openlettertotheryersonian:
On Tuesday, The Ryersonian made a shocking choice to publish an opinion piece by Michelle Bitran, a fourth-year journalism student, outlining her experience volunteering with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) over the summer. The article worked to alienate the Palestinian student population at Ryerson with awful nonchalance, leaving me, one of those many...

'Work Is Worship'
I wrote a poem of that title, a long time ago. I wrote it is a reminder to myself during a time long ago where my heart was weakened by events that rendered it bruised and sore. I felt the best way to get through the pain would be to bury myself in whatever work I could find. Schoolwork. Homework. Housework. Writing, running, anything to keep me occupied and keep me from dwelling on the slow,...

“There is no escaping reason; no denying purpose. Because as we both know, without purpose, we would not exist. It is purpose that created us. Purpose that connects us. Purpose that pulls us. That guides us. That drives us. It is purpose that defines us. Purpose that binds us.” Agent Smith | The Matrix Reloaded

The Future Is Bright
I am officially in my last year of high school. Then A-levels (which is considered as college) then university.
Just yesterday, it was my first day in first grade, and I was silently crying because my bag’s zipper broke and I didn’t know how to get my books out, scared I’d get in trouble on my very first day.
I don’t really feel all that much about it. I don’t think...

It Starts with One.
One thought. That thought gives rise to another, and another, and another. On on and on, until you finally stop and wonder, “How did I get here?” Most often, or probably always, that first thought is completely unrelated to where you ended up, except through the series of connected thoughts that got you there. With me so far?

“It’s funny how things change.”
A cliche statement, but only because of how often it is used. One situation, status, quickly morphing into something completely unlike itself. It happens all too often, proving that Life, Fate, Circumstance… they are the true masters of happenings.
Do they toss a coin? Close their eyes and point?
No. Can’t be. Far too cunning. Far...

There are people who are truly strong. And there are people who are weak, but put on a strong front.
The question is, though: Can anyone tell the difference?
Or better yet…
Is there any difference at all?
Are we all mere weaklings, playing strong to survive? Or is the tragedy far greater than this, and we are all far greater, stronger, and more powerful than we could ever imagine, yet...

I love reading quotes by unknown people. No, I don’t mean “unknown” as in not known by the general public. Simply, “unknown”. No one knows who said it, or when.
I love it because even if there is no name to attribute to the words, someone, one day, at one time, said something that was worthy enough to be recorded. Words that live on to this very day.
I wonder if...
Learning Experience
A few days ago, I was being yelled at by my little sister. (Yes, little sister. I am older and therefore not allowed to retaliate.) This is a common occurence at home. We don’t exactly get along for the most part. On this particular occasion, she was yelling because she had washed several dishes - almost all, in fact - which is my job, and I hadn’t expressed a single word or look of...

What if there was no such thing as the measurement of time? No seconds, no minutes, no hours. No set period for anything.
Would we do things differently? Would we be free-er, or even more limited? Would things pass quickly, or slowly, and how would we know? How do we know now, even if we’re in a room without a clock, and have no watch?
Would time-travel be possible? Or at least moving in...

Is there such a thing as telling too much of the truth, whether we are gentle or blunt and abrupt in the way we give it?
Or have we all simply lost our appreciation and respect for honesty nowadays, giving preference to a sweet lie rather than the bitter truth, simply because it may be something we don’t want to hear? Or in other cases, don’t want to say?
Secrecy
This is tumblr. Over one billion posts by people from all walks of life. Some people blog purely to share the beautiful things they find. Some people blog for publicity (yes, we have celebrities on here too, although I’m sure they’re not all just doing it for that). Some people blog to unleash their creativity upon the masses, hoping that someone out there will appreciate their work....
Magical Pages
I love to read. It’s one of my most favourite things to do. No, scratch that. It is my most favourite thing to do. The beauty of the written word, its power and ability to change lives, to create, to destroy, to bring to life and surface things one would not have been able to imagine otherwise; it’s a remarkable thing. Words have impact.

It really, really, really bothers me when girls, or guys for that matter, carve their signficant other’s name into their skin.
I’ve seen many people do it. They’re not depressed, it hurts like hell and they derive no other pleasure from it, just consider it a “declaration of their love”.
First of all, it demeans those who cut because they can’t help...
The Wisdom of Youth
When I was 11, I wrote a story. The plot and writing were quite terrible, really, but back then it was my pride and joy. A plain single-lined notebook was its home, in my best handwriting at the time, and a little picture was carefully drawn at the end of each chapter. I wrote in it whenever I could, excited as I watched the story unfold beneath my own hand, coming to life on the pages. And when I...

Call me stupid to trust, but I agree with this 100%. I hope I never lose that ability. To have faith in the goodness of others no matter what. Because if that is ever lost, the world would seem far too bleak, far too grey. I would lose all hope in it.
And to lose hope in...
Creativity... What is it?
I’m serious. Have you ever thought about it? First of all, what makes “Creativity” and “Logic” two so distinctly separate things, even though they seem to come from the same place: the mind? What makes us think of the former as something vibrant and colourful, while at the same time evoking the image of cold, reasoned calculations for the latter?
Let’s look at...

Hello there followers of mine. I do believe a “Thank you” is in order, considering the fact that despite my almost complete lack of activity on tumblr, you have not yet gotten bored and unfollowed me. Therefore.. Thank you most kindly.

Desire to Be
In slightly less than twenty four hours, I have finished two books by the same author: Paulo Coelho’s Like the Flowing River and Veronika Decides to Die. After first reading The Alchemist, I had become a great fan of his writing, because I felt it spoke to me in a way that was deep, profound and understanding of the inner psyche of man. Of me.
The effect his books have on me are quite...
Not A 'Nobody'
“How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.” ~ Henry David Thoreau.
With this quote echoing in my ears, there have been times when I have wished to give up the art of writing completely. After all, by all accounts, I have yet to ‘live’. I have not done anything in the least bit extraordinary; I have not accomplished anything impressive; I have...

I’m tired of following my heart..
I believe..
That you know you truly love someone, no matter who that person is, be it family, friend or lover, when love is the reason behind every reason for loving them. A never-ending circle.
It might not make sense, in a world where everything has to have a proper, logical reason, but that’s love. It has its own sense, not what we believe is rational.
Wouldn’t you agree?
Rebellion
It is said that our biggest regrets are not the things we did, but the things we didn’t do. The risks we didn’t take. The words we never spoke.
Almost every single one of my regrets in life so far have been just that. The things I didn’t do.
Believe that? Me. A teenager. By all laws of nature, I should be wild, impulsive. I should be out there doing crazy things and getting...

Putting A Label On It
“I am a goth. I am an emo. I am a jock, a geek, a joker. I am the preppy cheerleader and the intellectual bookworm. I am every label in the book, therefore I am nothing. Did you know that a virus can imitate the shape of the cell it’s in, so the white blood cells don’t recognize it? In that respect, I am a virus.”
That is the slightly edited first paragraph of something I...
Love Is
Love is nothing. Love is everything. Love is the light that shines from every recess of your heart, or it is the darkness that extinguishes that light. Love is a mended heart. Love is a broken heart. Love is passion. Love is lust. Love is desire. Love is family, friendship, and romance.
Love is everywhere. Love is nowhere. Love is pain, sorrow, longing, and suffering. Love is joy and happiness,...

You know what I find amazing?
The things we are willing to go through for those we love.
The hardships we are willing to endure, the pain we are willing to withstand, the tasks we are willing to perform. The risks we are willing to take.
To me, no action is nobler than when it is done in the name of true love..
It simply is… awe-inspiring.

People fear pain. Sounds like a stupid thing to say, doesn’t it? “Of course people fear pain! It isn’t exactly the most pleasant feeling in the world!” is what I’m betting your reactions are like at that statement.
What if I told you that you shouldn’t fear it?
